At one poin t, they sig ht a nav y ship and hoist a b rightly-c olored flag, n ot real izing i t signals t hat the sh ip is under quarantine. A s a result, t he other vess el turns awa y. Finally, the ship g rounds it self near an inhab ited tropi cal island and spr ings a lea k. While Rollo dons a deep sea diving suit and sub merges to patch the hole, th e black nat ives canoe o ut and take Bet sy captive . When R ollo em erges fr om the oc ean, th e nativ es are s cared off, e nabling him to rescue Be tsy and take her back to the ship. The na tives retur n and try to b oard the ship. After a fier ce struggle, Rollo and B etsy try to es cape in a sma ll dinghy. It starts to si nk, and the na tives s wiftly overtake them in the ir canoes.
